‘Botões’
Buttons
They were offered by the Godmother, who was
also responsible to give the shroud if the little girl became a
‘little angel of the Lord’. So, if – bad luck – the child died
the ‘botões’ would be sold to pay for the dress that would ‘
take her to heaven’! if such fatality didn’t occur, as the girl
was growing up, the ‘botões’ or little ‘botões’ would be
substituted by the Godmother, in such a way that, when the child
became a young lady she’d be the owner of the so desired
