‘Chapola’, ‘Parolos’ or Moon earrings
They were called ‘chapola’ because they were
made with thin gold plate (=chapa), and ‘parolos’ because they
were, then, used by the women from the countryside, who were
called ‘parolas’ by the city women. Nowadays these earrings are
no longer used in the countryside, but are very much wanted by
the city women. The countryside ladies, when they see them, they
shout: “Sume-te Diabo! (= Go away you Devil) What rustic
earrings!” They’re also called ‘moons’ because almost all of
them have crescents in relief.
