‘Corações’
Hearts
‘Opados’ (= bulging) – hallow and bulging,
they were made with very thin plate and decorated with thin
filigree strings or a granulated. They have love, floral or
religious motifs. They can be flaming or the so called ‘Duplos’
(=double) because they have what appears to be another heart on
top of the bigger one – they’re just the styling work of the
flames. They were the ones more commonly used by Viana’s women.

‘Em Chapa’ (= plated) –
they’re similar to
the ‘Borboletas’ (=butterflies) but they’re always flaming.

The filigree hearts
that
nowadays appear quite often on the Viana’s women chest were not
very used in ancient times – in part because of the large amount
of workmanship hand, and because they were usually made of
golden silver, a metal that is now used in almost all of the
ones currently made.
