‘Peças’
Pieces
These are authentic coins ornamented with a
showy contour in which some fasteners are inserted in order to
hold the coin without damaging its currency/numismatic value.
The most commonly used were the ‘cavalinhos’ (=small horse)
pounds and ‘Caras de Mulher’
(=woman’s face – Queen Victoria), because the
‘Caras de Homem’ (man’s face – King George V) were not very
appreciated by the women from Minho – coins of five and ten
thousand ‘réis’ (5 thousand ‘reís’ = 0,025 €).
